Responsibilities for musical directing a main stage musical include rehearsal most days, creating a second keyboard book for the second keyboard player, running the single orchestra rehearsal (the orchestra consists of two keyboards, a percussionist, and a bass player), and playing principal keyboard for all performances.
Cabaret performances at the Forestburgh Playhouse are 35 minute musical reviews performed by 8 to 10 members of the Resident Company in the Forestburgh Tavern before the main stage production during the week and after the main stage production on the weekends. This is a great opportunity for the musical director to be creative, as he or she often helps select the material as well as rehearses it (about 90 minutes a day) and plays the performances. Cabaret performances are accompanied by a single baby grand piano.
Musical directors at the Playhouse come from varied backgrounds but usually have similar skills: excellent piano skills, ability to communicate well and collaborate well with directors and other musicians, good teaching and coaching skills, and excellent overall musical taste and talent. Salary depends upon experience, and includes housing, meals, and transportation from New York City.
The start and end dates for the contracts will vary according to the musical director position, but the approximate dates are May 30 — September 4, 2018.
For the two musical directors, duties rotate back and forth. A tentative schedule for musical directors for the summer of 2018 might be as follows:
|Musical Director Jones||Musical Director Smith|
|1st Cabaret/Seussical||Million Dollar Quartet|
|Kiss Me Kate||2nd Cabaret|
|Fiddler on the Roof||4th Cabaret|
|5th Cabaret||Mamma Mia|
|The Last Five Years||7th Cabaret|
At this time, we may have an opening for a percussionist as well.
